Much like Portugal golf course development around Porto and North Portugal, Lisbon golf really picked up towards the end of the 19th century. It got a boost from English residents in Lisbon. Golf courses are prevalent across the whole of the Lisbon suburb areas including particularly Estoril, Cascais, Sintra and down south around Setubal and the Troia peninsula. Lisbon golf holiday package choice is now almost as good as Algarve golf - maybe not in numbers of golf courses, the Algarve still reigns supreme there. Madeira and neighbouring Porto Santo contain three superb golf courses in all. These include in Madeira, Santo da Serra Golf (27 holes), Palheiro Golf (18 holes) and in Porto Santo the Porto Santo Golf Course (18 holes plus 9 hole/par 3 pitch and putt).
Not many golf courses maybe, but each is of the highest luxurious quality, with excellent golfing facilities and easy access to Madeira's capital Funchal and its stunning landscape, and on Porto Santo near glorious beaches.
The Azores is well served by golf courses, and plans are afoot for more golf at Sao Miguel, Santa Maria and Faial Azores Islands.

Golfe Montebelo was the first golf course to be built in the Central Portugal region. It is in a stunning setting with the Serra da Estrela and Serra do Caramulo mountain ranges for views. Praia D'El Rey Golf and Country Club is a popular golf resort on the Silver coast 15 kilometres from Obidos. The golf course itself is a links course that stretches out to sand dunes on the seaward side overlooking cliffs and pines. It is an award-winning 18 hole championship golf course designed by American architect Cabell B Robinson. When you've finished a round of golf you can relax in the restaurant that has fabulous sea views over the course. You can book week long holidays or short golfing breaks. With it being just 50 minutes from Lisbon airport it's an easily accessible option.
The Clube Golfe de Ponte de Lima is a popular 18-hole golf resort that is open to non-members. It is located two kilometres south of Ponte de Lima near the intersection of the N201 and the N536. This is a mountain course, covering six kilometres amongst mature chestnut, cork and English oak trees leading, through a ravine, to the Quinta do Anquiao, with fantastic views over the Lima valley. Hole 3 (par 5), at 622 metres, is the longest drive in Portugal and one of the longest in Europe.
Near Vidago town is the nine-hole Vidago Golf Course - a par 33 course covering 2,449 metres - the only one in the Tras-os-Montes region. It was designed by Scottish architect Mackenzie Ross who rebuilt the Turnberry course in Scotland after the Second World War. One mile south of Espinho and eighteen miles south of Porto, Oporto Golf Club is a genuine 18 hole, par 71, links course that is the second oldest in Europe (the oldest on the Iberian Peninsular). It was founded in 1890 by the old British families trading in port wine that needed some form of recreational activity in Portugal.
