Vilamoura is certainly one of the tourist hubs on the Algarve Coast. As holiday resorts go, it's relatively young as it began to evolve in the 1970s. Fully equipped and all inclusive, Vilamoura is a popular bustling beach holiday resort on the Algarve with British and Irish visitors. With a large Marina offering a choice of boat trips and watersports, superb endless sandy beaches with more beaches at Falesia near Vilamoura, and enough luxury local golf courses close to hand, Vilamoura does all inclusive resort family holidays well, with a choice of family holiday attractions including nearby Atlantic Park Waterpark and Roma Mini Golf in central Vilamoura.
Vilamoura Marina is a bustling area also, with shops, bars, watersports and boat trip outlets (everything from deep sea fishing trips, fishing, parasailing, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving and jet skiing is available in Vilamoura from the Marina!) and restaurants lining the marina. View Roman remains at the Cerro da Vila Archeological Museum or the stunning wetlands area of Parque Ambiental Vilamoura - there's walking trails, a visitor centre with museum and a centre for environment and nature studies here. With all these marvellous holiday resources including championship local golf courses and great sandy beaches, Vilamoura also plays host to numerous events and competitions, particularly for sailing, cycling, championship golf tournaments, tennis and show jumping.
Vilamoura's main enormous sandy beach, a big puller for the family holiday crowds in peak season, stretches for 3 kms. Plenty of space for all then, and it's blue flag beach here at Vilamoura and nicely sheltered so perfect for families.
Watersports are numerous along Vilamoura's beach, including windsurfing, jet-skiing, paragliding, family pedalos and fishing. Bars and restaurants line the beach front offering plenty of eating out choices in Vilamoura - and right overlooking the beach too. Marvellous!
For family holiday excursions around the Algarve, Vilamoura is a good choice as a base. Numerous excursions and coach tours depart from here, usually with direct pick-up from your hotel or holiday villa/apartment. There are a number of waterparks near Vilamoura - the Big One of course, Aqualand just outside of Albufeira. There's Slide and Splash too, situated at Vale de Deus near Estombar and Praia Da Roch west from Vilamoura just off the EN125.
Atlantic Park. (EN125, Quatro Estradas, Quarteira-Loule road, Vilamoura. Mid-Apr-Oct 10am-6pm; Aug 10am-7pm.) The smallest of the Algarve's waterparks, but a fun packed day all round!
Slap bang in the middle of Vilamoura is the top family holiday attraction - Roma Golf Park with a distinctive 'Roman' flavour! It's mini golf all the way here, simulated to be like a real big golf course. Choose between two 18 hole rounds of mini golf. The design is all rather glamorous, with fountains, lakes and landscaped gardens. There's also a clubhouse on-iste designed in an ancient Rome style. All the family will find something to entertain here, with a play area for the tots, table games in the clubhouse, and a free miniature golf area where children under 10 can play with acompanying adults. They have weekly competitions here at Roma Golf too, if you fancy your chances! Great family fun. Roma Golf Park, Caixa Postal 927, 8125 Vilamoura, Algarve. Tel: 289 30 08 00. Open daily, 10am to midnight in the summer.
Ever been on a Water Roller Coaster - you can at Aquashow Family Park in Quarteira near Vilamoura (numerous excursion trips are organised to here from Vilamoura!). There's some real dare devil water slides and rides here, including the WhiteFall (see weblink right for photos of all the rides) plus a host of gentler water extravaganzas including the Wave Pool. Aquashow Family Park, Semino EN 396, 8125-303 Quarteira, Algarve. Tel: 351 289 389 396. (weblink right for details)

Vilamoura Tennis Centre, home to international tennis competitions, has 12 no less all weather tennis courts, 5 of which have lights. Tennis coaching is available and a bar, shop and restaurant are all on-site. Find it on the main Vilamoura dual-carriageway ideally close to hotels

It's well worth taking time to visit the Cerro da Vila Museu e Estacao Arqueologica situated north of the beach at Vilamoura. This archeological museum actually sits on the site of a Roman settlement dating from the Third Century. Roman mosaics and floors of a Roman villa can be seen here as well as a bathhouse.
The Archeological museum is open in the Summer from 9.30am to 1pm, and 2.30pm to 7pm. In Winter from 9.30am to 12.30pm, and 2pm to 6pm. The site was also the location for a Moorish farm.
