Faro, the Algarve's capital, is a hotspot for festivals, cultural events and rallys - notably its renowned Motorcycle rally on the third weekend of July annually.
Faro comes alive in mid October during its biggest festival - Feira da Santa Iria. General celebrations, fun fairs and more cram the streets of Faro. It's a good time to visit, but book accommodation well ahead!
Festivals and events in Faro include the annual May and June International Music Festival (although it seems to be starting earlier and earlier this music festival - 2007 events commenced in April). The hub of this Algarve Music Festival is Faro - you'll see the likes of acclaimed Portuguese composer Joao Domingos Bomtempo appearing.
The music festival leans towards the classical - The Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and the Orquestra do Algarve usually make appearances. Venues for this Algarve music festival include the Igreja Matriz in Alvor, the Teatro das Figuras in Faro and the Municipal Auditorium in Lagoa. Much of the funding for the event comes from Faro Municipal Council.
Checkout the excellent Algarve Observer weblink right for details on this music festival and other cultural events across the Algarve - it's an excellent cultural guide and available in English too!
